The Old Well Road House, as it was previously known when purchased by David and Christine Lamyman in the late 1970’s had seen better days. The construction of the motorway saw its latest occupiers, Little Chef move to the newer services just down the road at Junction 27 of the M5 leaving behind its dilapidated former building.
Prior to this it had been a much loved lido for the local population to enjoy from miles around, some of whom still return to see if the pool is still here – which it still is.
David and Christine saw opportunity where others did not on the now almost deserted A38 with grass growing in between the carriageways; for a garage selling petrol, classic cars and the Tearooms which is still an integral part of the business today. They relocated from Hertfordshire with their then, two young sons Michael and Robert to run their business whilst David was commuting to London where he still worked. Stephen was born sometime later, David gave up his job in London as a BT engineer and the garden centre grew, together with their three young sons.
Whilst it continued to operate as a garage forecourt for a while, a suggestion by one of our much loved sales reps and only recently retired that we should try selling plants, it soon became apparent that its new direction would be a Garden Centre and tearooms.
The family flew the nest and David and Christine continued to run the Garden Centre together with their close team of staff until Robert, their middle son decided to make Devon his home and return to the family business. Robert, his wife Michelle and their young family moved in so David and Christine could start to enjoy some time away from the business. Robert has taken over the day to day running of the Garden Centre with the continued hard work and dedication from his parents and the now significantly expanded team of staff.
